Kristallnacht comes to America. In February of 1933, after the fire in the Reichstag, the seat of parliament in pre-war Germany, the elected Nazi party had the excuse it needed to declare martial law, suspend democratic norms and eventually install the Nuremberg Laws. The Nuremberg Laws were modeled on the Jim Crow laws of the southern American states. They were the only body of laws in the world that divided citizens into favored or disfavored classes – in this case by race – Aryan and Semitic.
By November of 1938, the hatred ordinary Germans had developed for Jews due to the propaganda generated from the Jim Crow laws exploded in “The Night of Broken Glass” or Kristallnacht, a wholesale rampage against Jews that saw the smashing of the glass of Jewish stores across the nation.
I believe we can see these two events as history repeating itself in the assault on the Capitol standing for the fire in the Reichstag and the attack on Donald Trump, his supporters, and their ability to communicate online by Google, Apple, and Facebook as the equivalent of Kristallnacht.
Does the pivotal distinction lie in who caused the assault on America’s seat of government? Who are the Nazis in this case? The legacy media that has been disparaging Donald Trump as a Nazi, ironically enough, in league with their Democratic Party colleagues are the source of the widespread and constant revulsion directed toward the deplorables of Donald Trump’s America.
And clearly, the violent protesters who began the attack on the Capitol at 1 PM on January 6th, a full 55 minutes before Trump’s deplorables could walk across the ellipse to the Capitol after Trump’s speech ended at 1:11 PM, can rightly be seen as the Nazis who set fire to the Reichstag.
As for Kristallnacht, when the Silicon Valley and Wall Street allies of the Democratic Party simultaneously attacked the online businesses and gathering sites of the deplorables, their digital Night of Broken Glass, it is as clear as the glass that was shattered in 1938 who the modern Nazis are.
For further evidence, look no further than the blacklists of Trump officials being drawn up for retribution by Democratic Party loyalists. Thankfully, unlike the Jews of 1930’s Germany, we deplorables are not under the illusion that we are dealing with rational, law-abiding fellow citizens. We are dealing with the oldest enemy of humankind, resentment. We are re-enacting the sin of Cain slaying Abel. We are suffering the vicious attacks of the fearful, the resentful, and the corrupt.
Yet we, the deplorables, for the most part, are not despairing. We know life, at times, is about suffering. And we are Americans whose tree of liberty of must from time to time be watered with the blood of patriots, as Thomas Jefferson reminds us. Though we will suffer in these attacks, we understand the lessons of Kristallnacht and what eventually and inevitably happens to those who break the glass.
